On January 7, Peyton A. Eggleston, MD, FAAAAI, passed away at the age of 86. He was a giant in the field of allergy/immunology, known for his landmark studies defining the relationship between pediatric asthma and allergen exposures in the home environment. His work helped to transform the treatment of pediatric asthma and allergy.
Dr. Eggleston earned his medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine in 1965. He completed his pediatric internship at Vanderbilt University before receiving research and clinical training in Pediatric Allergy and Immunology at the University of Washington in Seattle.
He built and led the pediatric allergy program at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine where he eventually became a tenured Professor and later received a joint appointment in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences in the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. He was a beloved mentor and clinician, known for his kindness, generosity and wisdom.
“Dr. Eggleston was my first mentor as well as a dear friend and valued colleague, completely generous with his time, always supportive, and replete with sage advice,” said Robert A. Wood, MD, FAAAAI. “However, I was just one of the lucky ones as he was also a true friend and mentor to so many others over his 25 years at Johns Hopkins.”
