Board of Directors November Meeting Highlights

The members of the AAAAI Board of Directors met November 3-5, 2023, in Washington, DC, to discuss current and future activities. Board members also heard presentations from representatives from Hart Health Strategies, Inc., the FDA Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research (CBER), the FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER), the National Institute of Health (NIH)/National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI). Dr. Jeanne Marrazzo also joined the Board for the first time since taking on the role as the new Director of the NIAID.
The members of the Board of Directors appreciate the work of AAAAI committee members and chairs as they strive toward the AAAAI mission to advance the knowledge and practice of allergy, asthma and immunology for optimal patient care. Over the course of the meeting, a number of significant decisions and actions were made. Here are the highlights:
Approvals
A number of requests were granted approval, including the 2024 budget, the continued funding of the Joint Task Force on Practice Parameters and an enhanced program for connecting with minoritized students for 2024-2025. The Board also approved a change in structure of the Allied Health Professionals Assembly to increase efficiency. The slate of candidates for the 2024 Board of Directors election was also finalized. Additionally, the AAAAI Foundation was granted approval of Ulus Atasoy, MD, FAAAAI, as the Annual Giving Committee Vice Chair and Sharon B. Markovics, MD, FAAAAI, as the new AAAAI Foundation Council Vice Chair beginning in 2024. The 2024 AAAAI Foundation budget and supporting activities were also approved.
Presidential Presentations
AAAAI President, Jonathan A. Bernstein, MD, FAAAAI, shared more on his presidential initiatives, including:
  • Updates on the Volunteerism Addressing Environmental Disparities in Allergy (VAEDIA) Task Force, including a Work Group Report on volunteerism and the start of an environmental health equity research grant.
  • An international forum, in conjunction with the AAAAI Annual Meeting, addressing health disparities in different regions of the world.
Paul V. Williams, MD, FAAAAI, President-Elect, provided additional information on his coming presidential initiatives, including:
  • A task force on the environment and climate change.
  • Work on the environment and health equity to educate people on climate change.
  • Greening of Allergy Practices to educate people on the impact of practice on the environment and developing best practices for a “green practice”.
  • New ways to improve information sharing within AAAAI constituencies.
Miscellaneous
The Board selected Thanai Pongdee, MD, FAAAAI, to serve as the 2024 At-Large Executive Committee member, beginning at the close of the 2024 Annual Meeting.
A number of other topics were discussed, including future Annual Meeting locations, a newly approved policy on the development of AAAAI Position Statements and ongoing joint projects with a number of outside organizations.
In addition, the three divisions of the Board of Directors—Education, Practice & Policy and Research & Training—met individually to discuss committee activities.
